Nothing completes the character of a city or town quite like its coffee shops. Not only are they a place to get your morning fix, but they’re perfect for meeting up with friends, sitting back reading the morning paper, or getting caught up with some work on your laptop.
Luckily for you, McKinney, Texas has no shortage of great coffee shops!
McKinney coffee shops don’t just serve up classic espressos or a house brew. There are many different coffee shops that boast different drinks, foods, styles, and atmospheres – truly something for everyone, and always a new experience or drink to discover.
Being the bean fiends we are, the team of two here at Grow Mckinney compiled a little list of some of the best coffee shops just for you!
In no particular order, those are…
fILTER(ed) is a coffee shop in McKinney favorite and is known for its hip, industrial atmosphere. The brewers offer a selection of coffees from classic Texas roaster, Cuvée Coffee. All coffee is brewed right in front of you, and you can even ask for samples of their different brews before buying. Be sure to try the nitro cold-brew! To go with their artisan coffee, they sell pastries and other foods from local bakeries. A favorite is the Sweet Bread, baked in McKinney by The Rosemary Bakery. What really sets fILTER(ed) apart though is the baby grand piano, board games, outlets, and free WiFi. This shop is a great place to hang out, do work, or come watch a jazz show on Saturday nights. You can even take a shot at tickling the ivories yourself, every Monday through Friday from 5 pm – 7:30 pm. For the musically inclined, fILTER(ed) allows use of their space for recitals, open play time, and choir opportunities, just ask about reserving a space. It’s a place where artists, musicians, and coffee-lovers collide.
2. SNUG on the Square
Located in historic downtown McKinney, this coffee house/restaurant is ideal for grabbing a quick cup of joe or sitting down for a full brunch. As the name implies, it’s a comfy little establishment, with plenty of seating and a homey atmosphere. They offer a number of specialty drinks in additional to traditional coffee, including chocolate iced drinks, Reese’s and Almond Joy espresso drinks, and lattes in flavors like almond, raspberry, and peppermint. They also serve breakfast and lunch all day, so try one of their signature Snug Melt sandwiches. Establishing them as a pillar of the community, they showcase local artists’ and musicians’ work throughout their shop. There’s no better place to feel like you’re in the heart of McKinney.
3. Spoons Cafe
Spoons Cafe is a town favorite for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. From comfort food and Tex-Mex to American burgers and sandwiches, they have it all. The restaurant is in a renovated 1920s building, which once served as the Texas Power and Light company. The kitchen is open, allowing customers to see their food being made fresh right before their eyes. The Garage at Spoons Cafe (which actually is a renovated garage) is a rentable space that serves as its own coffee and ice cream shop when not in use. They serve up a variety of classic coffee house favorites, but what sets them apart is their specialty menu. Drinks like “Brake Fluid” – a mix of caramel, hazelnut, and banana in a latte – are what make Spoons Cafe a downtown favorite. And of course, they have a selection of bakery foods to complement them, including muffins, scones, bakery bars, and cookies. Stop in for a meal and finish off with a specialty coffee drink, or just swing by The Garage for a quick cup.
4. Scooter’s Coffee
Scooter’s is a chain drive-through establishment throughout the Midwest (and expanding) known for its coffee and smoothies. What sets it apart is its ability to mix the two. Combining ice cream and coffee flavors, they’ve come up with “Blenders”: coffee and ice cream smoothie creations perfect for a hot summer’s day. Whether you’re feeling Mocha, White Mocha, or Caramelicious, there’s always something to satisfy both your caffeine craving and sweet tooth. Of course, they also serve classic coffee, espresso drinks, smoothies, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches. Another plus: they have a drive-through, so you can get your coffee on the run – perfect for a quick pitstop or summer treat.
5. McKinney’s Sweet Spot
Though they specialize in dessert and bakery items, McKinney’s Sweet Spot is also a great place to stop in for your daily caffeine fix. Their famous cupcakes and a large variety of cookies, pastries, and bars match perfectly with a latte, mocha, or just regular coffee. It’s a great place to visit with friends and grab some sweets and drinks. The central location also makes it easy to get some ice cream or a coffee on the go.
6. Pacific Tradewinds Coffee Co
They are truly the coffee brewing masters of Mckinney, Tx. It is all they do, and they do it very well. With claims like, “Home of the Best Cold Brew and Coffee Club for Kona Coffee” they kindly welcome a challenge. Every month they hold a “Brew Ha Ha” Event sharing their latest craft coffee creation with the Tradewinds Coffee Club or anyone that wishes to attend. What makes them different? You can buy crafted Kona coffee in bulk! Also, if drinking your caffeine isn’t enough for you, they make chocolate covered coffee beans as well as candy lover creations like the TexaKona Krackle.
7. Honi’s Coffee House
Honi’s Coffee House is a very different flavor of bean monger. This coffee shop exists as a non-profit organization founded to transform the lives of children through a holistic approach using social business as their tool. Their organization believes in breaking the cycle of poverty through spiritual, mental, and physical development – and they are using coffee to do it!
8. Benny’s Bagels
A classic New York bagel and coffee place, Benny’s Bagels is a must for a more low-key place to visit, or just to grab a good breakfast in the morning. Another “chain coffee shop” but its okay, we are focused on the coffee, right? They serve up plenty of espresso drinks in addition to their classic brew, and pairing one of their drinks with a bagel or breakfast sandwich makes a winning combo. The rustic shop gives off a classic bagel shop vibe, and they have a number of tables. Benny’s is the kind of place where cashiers learn your name fast and greet you with it. If you’re looking for a great, quick breakfast place to add to your morning routine, look no further than Benny’s.
9. Starbucks at the Adriatica Village
I know what you are thinking… Starbucks? But, you haven’t been to this Starbuck’s location. This is the Starbucks at the Adriatica Village. The Croatian village-style architecture alone makes this place an environment of inspiration. On Thursday night stay for the wine pairings and tastings. So Starbucks is now serving beer and wine? YES, it is true, they read your over-worked mind. For those that have spent an entire day working on a project at Starbucks, you can now top off all your hard work with a glass of wine or beer but that is for another blog.
